Getting Started on TPT: Making Products Video #1

I made a short and hopefully not too boring video about getting started on TPT.  I have seen that several people are interested in how those of us already on TPT are making our products.  So, I answered the question briefly in my last blog post (including some links to graphics, backgrounds & fonts I use).  Now, I have posted a short video on how to get started making your materials using a common program, Word.

    This first video covers:
1) Formatting your document
2) Using text boxes
3) Inserting graphics
4) Making hyperlinks

Thanks for reading (and watching)!

And, if you're ready to sell on TPT, jump right in!  There's an apple icon to your right that says "Sell on TPT with me."  Here's what would happen if you click it:    TPT gets at least 15% of your sales.  I would get 5% of their share (not yours) for the first two years that you sell on TPT.  If you decide to sell on TPT, I would love it if you joined me!

  6. Nice work, this will help so many people. FYI, for some reason in your PDF, the links didn't work. I'm on a Mac with Adobe Reader, not sure why.

  7. For video #1, the link brings you back to this page so you can read a little background, too :) For video #2, the link takes you straight to the video. They should be working now. Thank you all soooo much for the feedback. It is very helpful!

  12. Thank you sooooo much! I'm not sure I feel confident enough to try to sell anything yet, but I am going to play with it. I would love another video with more tips.

  13. Wow! Thanks so much, Tam. I've been using WORD for umpteen years and usually become very frustrated when I try to use graphics. Your video showing how to format and hints to use text boxes and .png format are invaluable to me. I'm anxious to view your second video. Thanks again!

  14. Thank you for your Video and the tips. I did not know the trick to add some pages before starting; Keeping everything where it was supposed to be was always a problem. Do you just save it as a pdf before loading it to TPT store?

    Thanks

    1. Yes, I save it as a PDF before I upload it, that way no one can extract the graphics. This is in the terms of use for most of the graphics I use. I'll try to cover that in video 3 or 4. Video #2 is about using tables.

  16. Don't worry! I'll cover converting to a PDF in video 3 or 4 (for those of you who need it earlier, I don't want to wait until the last video). Video #2 is already posted, look for the link in my post above. Thanks for the feedback!

  17. I just watched video #1 and had a few questions. Where do you get most of your fonts and clip-art? What are the copyright restrictions for using web clip-art if I am to launch on TPT?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. On my post just before this one, I list where I get most of my clipart and fonts. For all clipart that I buy, the author retains copyright. They just require that you give credit somewhere on the product, usually by placing a link back to their store. There are a few sites where the clipart/photos are in the public domain. openclipart.org is one of them that I have used before. This means you can use the clipart for commercial use with no credit, but I at least provide a link back to the site. Just read the terms of use carefully and you'll be okay.

    1. I have used powerpoint a lot for other things, but usually just use Word to make my classroom items. I am hearing that several people use Powerpoint, though, so maybe I should try that, as well.

    1. I just tried it and it played all the way to the end. You might want to try closing it all out and starting it again. If you keep having problems, you might want to try to watch it on a different computer?

  24. And one last question. I know you mentioned in a previous post where you get backgrounds to use on your teachers pay teachers products. I am new in making things and not quite ready to charge for what I make, so I would like backgrounds I can use on freebies. Do you know of any like this? Thank you oh so much for your help!

  25. I asked Terri at cocoamint.com before and she said I could use her stuff for freebies. Also, there are some backgrounds on digiscrapkits.com and she lets you use them for freebies. But, you might want to send a quick email to ask and/or recheck the terms of use just to be sure.

  27. Hi, I am trying to open video 1 and it sends me to google docs- am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help.

  28. That's right. The video is on Google Docs. It will pop up with a play button in the center of the video. Just click it and watch! Thanks for watching!

  29. I am having the same problem with video taking me to google docs. I started an account and everything. It keeps saying no data. Is their a step I am doing wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Just click on the caption below the picture and Google Docs should pop up right away The screen will have a black rectangle in the middle as the video loads. I had to wait about 1 or 2 minutes. Then, when it is ready, a "Play" triangle will appear. Click it and watch! I just tried it again and it worked. If you are still having problems, you might try contacting Google to see what is wrong or search for "problems with Google Docs" to see if you can find an answer. I'm not all that familiar with Google Docs myself yet, so sorry I can't be of more help in that department. Thanks for watching the video!

Even if I don't end up posting things on TpT, this was VERY valuable to me by showing how to do some quite simple things in WORD that I didn't even know about! Awesome! I'm looking forward to the next video. Thank you!!

  48. What do Mac users use instead of Word???

    ReplyDelete
  49. I use a Mac and I have Word. You can purchase it for the Mac. I recently started using Pages on the Mac, too. It is a very intuitive program. It is very similar to Word in a lot of ways, but one big difference is that you don't have to insert text boxes. You can just drop your graphics into the picture! Plus, you can tilt both pics and text in any direction. The only downside I have found is that there is no way to darken your graphic like you can in Word. You can, however, add a shadow, which darkens it somewhat.

    1. I do a few things. First of all, I put my name and year created on almost every page. I also offer my products as PDFs so they cannot be altered. I also include a copyright page. Yet, I have to say that still, if someone wants to steal it, they can. It's just more difficult. I do web searches from time to time to see if anyone has posted my items for free on their site. This is usually just a lack of understanding how the web works. I hope that helps!

  54. Thank you so much for the first video. It was really helpful. I thought power point was the only way to create products for TPT's but when you said word can be used, I was relieved because I am very comfortable using word. It was very informative. This was just what I needed. Can't wait to see video #2. :)

    1. I'm not very good with technical things, but I'll try. When I visit the link, the video automatically pops up with the play icon to click. I'm not sure why this isn't happening for you, but my first guess is that whatever program your computer is trying to open it with is not working (or, you don't have a program that will open it). First, I would go to the video page. Right under the title of the video, click on "File" then on "Download." Try saving it to your computer first, then right click on it and go down to "Open with" and see which program your computer will let you choose to open it. I'd try everything that it lets you click on to see if any program you have will open it. If this doesn't work, I would try to watch it on another computer. I have a Mac, but I don't recall anyone having trouble viewing it yet, regardless of the type of computer they had. I'm so sorry that you're having trouble viewing it. I hope one of these suggestions helps! Tammy
