Why I (Heart) Boom Cards™!

WHAT ARE BOOM CARDS™?

Boom Cards™ are one of the coolest things I've seen in a while! They can be thought of as mini apps or digital task cards. AND they are created by teachers! You can even purchase an Ultimate membership ($25 per year) and make them yourself! Each deck has a certain number of cards, tasks, or questions (usually 20) for the student to complete. Decks have already been created for a wide variety of subjects, including math, reading, phonics, science, social studies, and more! They work on interactive white boards, desktops, iPads, tablets, and even your phone! So, they can be practiced in a large group format, then individually.

The decks come in different formats. Some are multiple choice, some are drag and drop, while others include fill-in-the-blanks or have multiple correct answers. I love how this provides teachers with many options for helping students practice different subjects, while offering the students unique ways to interact with the material. You can even add sounds so that students can have the directions or sight words read to them.

MY FAVORITE BOOM CARDS FEATURES

I have been using Boom Cards with my kindergarten class for a couple of months now. Here are the features I love:

1) Students can practice content that exactly matches our curriculum! Right now, they are working on making numbers 11-20, identifying sight words, counting objects, and beginning addition.

2) I can add my own sounds! I use this feature to add an icon for students to click when they need to hear the directions. I also use it to ask students to find specific sight words. The possibilities are endless!

3) Since the content is digital, I can use as much color as I want . . . and give absolutely no thought to how much ink it will use! So I add photos for the backgrounds to make them interesting and artwork from the best clipart artists around. I can add so many things to make the cards more engaging and fun!

4) Students can practice at home! No more summer slide!!! You can send the link, username, and password home for each student. This makes it easy and fun for students to work on academic skills over school breaks!

5) You can assign decks to the whole class or individual students! This is huge! This way, I know that each student is working right at his/her instructional level.

6) BoomLearning.com is always improving! They are very busy getting feedback from teachers and creators. They are always adding new features and improving old ones. I love having new features to add to my decks!

Could your student(s) use a review of kindergarten math and literacy this summer? If so, then take a look!

This math and literacy pack includes 44 pages of kindergarten materials. It would make a great review of the basics so that your child avoids the "summer slide!" The pack has pages that focus on letter sounds, upper- and lowercase letter matching, CVC and CVCe words, counting, addition, subtraction, sight words, writing sentences, and more! Every page has a fun, engaging summer theme!

What's Included

Writing in the Sand & Beach Letter Match: On these pages, students will match and write upper- and lowercase letters.
Summer Sounds & Beginning Sounds: These 2 pages have students match an object with its beginning sound.
Summer Scramble & Sunny Day Scramble: Students cut out and rearrange letters to make CVCe words.
Sets of Summer: Here, students count each set of objects (<10) and write the numbers.
We Love to Count & Let's Count Seeds: On these pages, students cut out objects and glue the correct quantity of them to match each number.

Share the Surfboards & Share the Ice Cream: With these pages, students will practice matching sets of the same number.
Read, Write, and Draw (#1-#3): These 3 pages each provide students with a sentence to copy and space to illustrate the sentence.
Summer Sentence Fun, Writing in the Sand, Summer Splash, & Watermelon Fun: For each of these pages, students will cut out a scrambled sentence, arranged the sight words in the correct order, and copy the sentence.
2 Roll, Read, and Color pages: Here, students roll one die and read the corresponding sight word sentence. The first person to read the same sentence four times (developing fluency) wins!

Number to Quantity Match FREEBIE

Here's a useful MATH FREEBIE for preschool or kindergarten from Mrs. Daleo
My son had fun cutting out the numbers and gluing them under the correct quantity of dots.

This set comes with 4 different number to quantity matching sheets: 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, and 15-20. They are perfect for helping students develop number sense, as well as for cutting and gluing practice.

These sheets would work well for assessment, independent practice, as a whole or small group activity, or as a math center.

Mrs. Daleo's Teaching Tip
She created this set as a math assessment. She says to "plan your report card assessments ahead of time. Try to find as many assessments that can be done as a whole group rather than one on one. In kindergarten, one on one time is hard to come by, so any assessment that can be done by all the students at the same time is a great timesaver!"

Click on the picture below to download a set for your students!
